Terms of service

Last updated: July 2026

Scope

These Terms govern the use of scan.mx, an online service operated by Fili Wiese, Friedrichstr 155, 10117 Berlin, Germany (“operator”). By using the service, the user agrees to these Terms.

About the service

scan.mx is a free tool that checks the public email and DNS configuration of a domain supplied by the user. It reads publicly available DNS records and may perform a connectivity probe of the domain published mail servers. It is not a vulnerability scanner, penetration-testing service, security audit, or a guarantee that any system is secure or that mail will be delivered.

Permitted use

The service checks publicly published DNS and mail-server configuration. By running a check, the user confirms their use is lawful and does not overload, disrupt, or attack any system.

Prohibited use

The operator may block, throttle, rate-limit, or reject requests where misuse, excessive use, legal risk, or operational risk is suspected.

Reports and no guarantee

Reports are provided for general informational purposes only. Results may be incomplete, inaccurate, delayed, or different from results observed from another network. A grade or check result does not prove that a system is secure, insecure, or that mail will be delivered. Users are responsible for independently verifying results.

Public reports and opt-out

Reports are served as public permalinks and may be indexed by search engines. Domain owners can de-index a report or block scanning of a domain on the opt-out page.

Availability and changes

The service is provided free of charge on a best-effort basis. The operator does not guarantee uninterrupted availability, specific response times, continued availability of particular features, or continued free access. Features, checks, rate limits, and the API may be changed, restricted, or discontinued for legal, technical, security, abuse-prevention, or operational reasons.

Audit logging and abuse prevention

The operator logs requests for security, abuse prevention, troubleshooting, and rate-limit enforcement. Logs may include IP address, ASN, country, user agent, Cloudflare Ray ID, the checked domain, status, and timestamps. Logs are generally retained for a limited period and then deleted, unless longer retention is necessary for a specific incident or legal obligation. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Liability

Nothing in these Terms limits liability where it cannot be limited under applicable law. The operator is liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, and for injury to life, body, or health. In cases of slight negligence, the operator is liable only for breach of an essential obligation, limited to foreseeable damage typical for a free online service.

Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding conflict-of-law rules. If the user is a merchant or legal entity under public law, the exclusive place of jurisdiction is Berlin, Germany. Mandatory consumer protection provisions remain unaffected.
